If you’ve struggled to get smooth buttercream cakes or your buttercream swirls have been a flop, this easy buttercream frosting is for you!
This buttercream frosting recipe is great for making buttercream flowers, smoothing onto cakes, and making buttercream swirls on cupcakes.
Because this buttercream recipe is made using butter and shortening, it holds up nicely in warmer temperatures, and won’t melt as easily from the heat of your hands while holding the piping bag. You’ll love how delicious and easy buttercream frosting is to make!
Add vegetable shortening and softened butter to the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment (if using a hand mixer you can use the beater attachments).
Cream the butter and shortening at medium speed until it’s light and fluffy and lumps are no longer visible. Scrape the sides of the bowl with a spatula in between mixing.
Add vanilla extract and incorporate by mixing.
Add confectioners sugar one cup at a time, mixing on low to incorporate each cup of sugar.
The buttercream will resemble a stiff dough, scrape the sides of the bowl well and add milk. If you’re looking for a specific consistency, add the milk one tablespoon at a time until it’s to your liking. Add more or less milk to thin or thicken the consistency.
